After strong debate performance, Santorum says ‘our time will come’

Coming off a widely praised performance in Thursday
Republican presidential candidate, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum participates in the Republican presidential candidates debate in Jacksonville, Fla. (Matt Rourke - Associated Press) night’s Jacksonville Republican presidential debate, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum insists he is in the Republican race for the long haul.

Despite a win in the Iowa caucuses, Santorum has struggled for attention since — particularly in Florida, where media attention has centered on a behemoth battle between former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Speculation that Santorum might not be fully committed to the race was fueled when his campaign indicated he would leave the campaign trail for fundraisers in Virginia and Pennsylvania. His current schedule shows no campaign events for Saturday, just three days before the Florida vote.

But Santorum says his strategy is designed to best marshal his resources for a long effort. He believes conservatives will return to him as an alternative to Romney after an inevitable Gingrich flameout.

“We’re running strong campaigns in several states right now,” Santorum told CNN following the Thursday debate. “We now have the resources. We have raised over twice as much money in the last three weeks as we did in the first nine months. So we’re now having resources to be able to spread our wings a little bit. And we’re going to engage in this campaign”.

“And as we have seen here tonight, there’s a lot of baggage, a lot of problems with the two, quote, front-runners. And I think, as you saw tonight, we’re going to start moving up again. But our time will come,” he said.

Santorum was widely praised by Republicans for pressing the case against Romney and Gingrich in the Thursday debate. He was especially aggressive in arguing that Romney would have trouble challenging President Obama on health care in a general election because the Massachusetts health insurance program implemented under Romney is too similar to the new federal program.

And he drew loud applause by claiming the moral high ground after a long and bitter exchange between Romney and Gingrich over Romney’s wealth and Gingrich’s work for Freddie Mac.

Santorum’s campaign also released schedules showing Florida campaign events through Monday — a long lead time for a campaign that has typically offered guidance on the candidate’s schedule for only 24 hours at a time.

That may be designed to signal Santorum’s intention to quickly return to the trail after a trip to Pennsylvania.

And there is new indication that an independent political action committee running ads on Santorum’s behalf — the Red, White and Blue Fund — has no intention of backing off in coming days.

Investor Foster Friess, a lead contributor to the PAC, told The Wall Street Journal that he plans to fund ads for Santorum in states that vote after Florida.

“I’m committed to Rick Santorum, and I’m going to be giving more to Rick Santorum,” Friess told the Journal. “It’s just a matter of when and how much.”

On Bloomberg TV Friday, Friess said he believes Santorum will become a front-runner soon. But he also said he had “high admiration” for Romney and Gingrich — and suggested that if Santorum becomes president, he should appoint Romney to head his economic policy.

“Anybody who’s going to run against Obama, I’ve got an open check book for,” he said when asked if he would contribute to a Republican nominee other than Santorum.

Florida Republican debate: Where and when to watch

Debates matter. That was one of the major takeaways from the South Carolina primary, which Newt Gingrich won handily on Saturday.

With the primary shaping up to be more competitive than it seemed just a few weeks ago and the winner-take-all Florida primary just eight days away, Monday and Thursday night’s debates will matter quite a lot.

Here are the details you will need to tune into Monday night’s Republican Candidates Debate sponsored by NBC News, National Journal, and the Tampa Bay Times.

The debate at the University of South Florida in Tampa, will air on NBC at 9 p.m. ET in the place of “Rock Center” and will be livestreaming on NBCNews.com, NationalJournal.com TampaBay.com.

As usual, The Fix will host a live chat throughout the debate starting at 8:30 p.m. and Felicia Sonmez will live-blog all the events starting around 8:30 p.m. in Election 2012.

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.), U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and former U.S. senator Rick Santorum (Pa.).

Rock Center host Brian Williams will host his second debate of the 2012 cycle. National Journal’s Beth Reinhard and the Tampa Bay Times’s Adam Smith will also question the participants.

Paterno won 409 games in 46 years as the head football coach for Penn State. He was fired dismissed as head coach by the Penn State board of directors in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky scandal. Sandusky, his former assistant coach at Penn State from 1969 to 1999, is charged with more than 50 counts of sexually abusing young boys over a 15-year period.

Smaller TextLarger TextText SizePrintE-mailReprints By Sally Jenkins,

Joe Paterno could outtalk anybody in that Brooklyn beat cop’s voice of his. But the lung cancer and the chemo had left him breathless, and what emerged in two days of conversations with him, the last interview he would give, sounded like a series of sighs. Some of them satisfied, some of them regretful, all of them aware that his life was drawing to a close and 85 years were being relentlessly and reductively defined. ¶ Paterno studied his own end, and knew it wasn’t going to be storybook. So much for the old-fashioned narrative he had built, of bookish yet vigorous young men filling a stadium in the Alleghenies, men he had uplifted such as Franco Harris and Lydell Mitchell and Brandon Short, autumn leaves swirling softly over their heads. ¶ “There’s the kind of stories I wish we could tell,” Paterno whispered. ¶ But a modern grotesquery intervened, and there were too many other boys who allegedly had been damaged.

For most of his 61 years as a football coach at Penn State, Paterno built a record of thorough decency and good intention. He loved his wife, reared five nice children, taught his students well. He turned down big money for the role of a tenured professor, and strolled every day from his modest home to his unpretentious office. He acquired real power, and generally tried not to abuse it, and if he sometimes he did, he covered for it by insisting on paying for his ice cream cones. He set out to prove that staying in one place could be as rewarding as climbing to the next rung. He meant to walk away sooner. He stayed too long.

He stayed so long that he became more of an ideal to his followers than a person. Then the horrific happened, and the quaint success story in the peaceful hamlet was destroyed by allegations that Jerry Sandusky, Paterno’s assistant coach for 30 years, was a serial child molester and that Paterno, when told of an incident involving Sandusky and a small boy in the Penn State showers, did his duty but no more, passing the report to his superiors. The only way to give the tragedy the gravity it deserved was to topple the icon who behaved so fallibly.

“You got what you got,” he says he told himself, after he was fired by the board of trustees in November. “You did about as much as you can do, on the field and off the field.”

Yet Paterno also understood he was the face of a terrible inaction. He had done more than some people, yet less than he should have when he failed to press his superiors about Mike McQueary’s report of seeing Sandusky doing something sexual to a small boy in the Lasch football building.

“I should have said ‘Hey where are we with this thing?’” Paterno said. He described himself as paralyzed by the unthinkable subject matter. He had “backed away,” he said, and trusted his bosses to handle it.

“I didn’t know which way to go,” he said. “And rather than get in there and make a mistake .?.?.”

A week ago, Paterno invited this reporter into his home because he wanted to defend his record and give his version of events in the Sandusky case. He often seemed to be trying to explain his actions to himself as much as to others. It was a difficult conversation because it was not only his first interview on the subject of Sandusky but quite possibly the last interview he would ever give. His health was clearly precarious, and his answers often trailed off or wandered. Shortly afterward, he failed badly, and slipped in and out of consciousness over the next few days.

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — In an electric debate here Thursday night, the four remaining Republican presidential candidates clashed sharply over who has the temperament, character and know-how to lead the party into a general election as they clamored to take advantage of the race’s changing dynamic.

Newt Gingrich said it was “despicable” of the news media to raise questions about a previous marriage. A feisty Rick Santorum offered himself as the only true conservative in the race and accused his two main rivals for “playing footsie with the left.”

Front-runner Mitt Romney again became defensive under pressure to release his tax returns, saying that he would not apologize for being successful in America and that he would release his returns in April.

And Rep. Ron Paul lamented that he sometimes became an afterthought.

On a day in which Texas Gov. Rick Perry withdrew from the race, Santorum sought to deny Gingrich the mantle of the conservative alternative to Romney, attacking him for his big ideas and accusing him of a lack of follow-through.

“Grandiosity has never been a problem with Newt Gingrich,” said Santorum, a former senator from Pennsylvania. “Newt’s a friend. I love him. But at times, you’ve just got, you know, sort of that, you know, worrisome moment that something’s going to pop. And we can’t afford that in a nominee.”

The debate got off to a combative start as the moderator, CNN’s John King, asked Gingrich to respond to interviews in which his second wife, Marianne, said he asked her to agree to an open marriage while he was having an affair.

A defiant Gingrich said “the story is false” and lashed out at what he described as “the destructive, vicious, negative nature” of the media.

“Every person in here has had someone close to them go through painful things,” Gingrich said. “To take an ex-wife and make it, two days before the primary, a significant question for a presidential campaign is as close to despicable as anything I can imagine.”

‘Why not release it?’

This Republican debate carried an unusual sense of urgency for the three men trying to stop Romney’s march to the nomination.

The former Massachusetts governor faced tough questions about releasing his tax returns and tried to beat back accusations of slashing jobs during his tenure at the private-equity firm Bain Capital.

“I’m going to stand and defend capitalism across this country throughout this campaign,” Romney said. “I know we’re going to get hit hard from President Obama, but we’re going to stuff it down his throat and point out it is capitalism and freedom that makes America strong.”

Gingrich released his tax returns Thursday night just as the debate was about to begin, increasing pressure on Romney to do the same. Romney again appeared uncomfortable discussing the issue. He promised to release this year’s return when it is filed in April, along with records from some previous years. But when asked whether he would follow the model of his father, George, who released 12 years’ worth of records when running for president in 1968, Romney replied simply: “Maybe.”
