Courteney Cox joins Twitter; Tim Gunn says he’s been celibate for 29 years

Courteney Cox. (Christopher Polk - Getty Images for the Broadcast Television Journalists Association) Courteney Cox has joined Twitter, giving us normal folks a chance to feel like we’re IRL friends with her. The actress has been tweeting nice things at her “Cougar Town” fans, as well as a cute picture of a dog. I think she’s got this Twitter thing down! (@CourteneyCox)

Tim Gunn is known as the kindly mentor on “Project Runway.” And that’s pretty much all we knew about him ... until now. The fashionisto told the panelists on ABC’s “The Revolution” he has been celibate for 29 years: “Do I feel like less of a person for it? No! Not even remotely.” Read the reason behind the decision, at the link. (EW)

Joan Rivers has some unkind words for Chelsea Handler , after the jump.

Joan Rivers fired off a retaliatory comment at Chelsea Handler this week, calling her “an ordinary girl who was [expletive] somebody high up in the industry.” She added, “Wherever she is, she’s drunk.” After the comments went public, one of Handler’s Twitter followers asked her, “SO! Are you really a drunkin [expletive]? BC Joan Rivers said you are!!! lol” Handler replied, “I am!” Link is NSFW. (Buzzfeed)

JaVale McGee joins Gheorghe Muresan on Wizards’ franchise list

JaVale McGee, meet Gheorghe Muresan.

I got two, what about you? (Streeter Lecka - GETTY IMAGES) In the nearly 15 years since Muresan played his last game for the Washington Bullets, the franchise has had five players record games with at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks, but none had ever done it multiple games in the same calendar month – until McGee joined Muresan on Saturday in that exclusive company.

McGee notched 22 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots in the Wizards’ 102-99 win over the Charlotte Bobcats. Exactly two weeks earlier, McGee had 23 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks in a loss to Philadelphia. Muresan had three 20-10-5 games in March 1996.

Chris Webber is the only other Wizard since 1997 with at least two 20-10-5 games in the same season. Jahidi White had two such games in the same calendar year in 2000. Andray Blatche and Antawn Jamison both accomplished the feat once.

McGee and Memphis center Marc Gasol are the only players in the NBA with 20-10-5 games this season, and both have done it twice. McGee has done it three times in the past two seasons – including a 28- point, 18-rebound, 5-block game against Golden State – and the only players to claim that accomplishment are all-star big men Dwight Howard and Amare Stoudemire. Stoudemire did it four times last seasons and Howard did it three times.

McGee has seven double-doubles this season and has recorded at least 10 rebounds in his past three games. He leads the NBA with 63 blocked shots.

Steve Chenevey leaves WTTG, joins WJLA as anchor

Steve Chenevey, the morning news anchor at local Fox affiliate WTTG, is leaving to join WJLA at the end of this month.

Chenevey, who has worked at WTTG since 2003, will partner up with Cynne Simpson on the ABC affiliate to co-anchor “Good Morning Washington” and “ABC7 Noon News.”

Simpson has been the permanent solo anchor for both newscasts (though with occasional fill-in co-anchors) since taking over last June for Alison Starling, who moved to the 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts.

Station general manager Bill Lord — recently upped to vice president and GM, overseeing both Allbritton-owned WJLA and NewsChannel 8 — said in the announcement that the station has been “working to put this team together for quite some time.”

“Steve and Cynne did an exceptional on camera session together, and we believe they will be the team to watch on morning news for years to come,” Lord added.

Itzhak Perlman joins BSO at StrathmoreSmaller TextLarger TextText SizePrintE-mailReprints By Joe Banno,

No one attends an Itzhak Perlman concert expecting to hear historically informed performances of baroque and classical repertoire. True to form, the violinist delivered well-upholstered, old-school readings of the “Winter” and “Summer” concertos from Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” at Strathmore Hall on Saturday, playing the solo parts and leading the Baltimore Symphony from his violin. He then conducted the orchestra in a comparably traditional rendering of Mozart’s Symphony No. 25.

Despite the reduced size of the orchestra (roughly two dozen players), string tone was silken and vibrato-rich in the Vivaldi, and Perlman’s playing possessed all its accustomed sweetness and warmth (although a handful of less-than-immaculate notes were surprising from a violinist known for flawless finish). The overall tone of the readings was decidedly beefy and larger than life, leading Perlman to have the harpsichord amplified, an unfortunate choice that resulted in a distractingly outsize keyboard part with the canned sound of a poorly amped electric guitar.

(Akira Kinoshita/Courtesy of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra) - Violinist and conductor Itzhak Perlman delivered the “Winter” and “Summer” concertos from Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” at Strathmore Hall on Saturday.

Players were added, and the harpsichord jettisoned, for a moderately paced, neatly proportioned performance of the Mozart work. This is a symphony that comes to fizzing life when period-instrument ensembles rip through it at lickety-split tempos. But with Perlman’s modern sonorities and comfortable, middle-of-the-road approach (and his observing of repeats in the score that stretched the music’s youthful inspiration to the breaking point), this perfectly respectable reading outstayed its welcome.

The concert concluded with Perlman conducting Brahms’s Fourth Symphony. If he found little new to say in this war horse piece, his interpretation was poised and affectionately molded, with a balance of glowing, saturated string tone and character-rich work from the BSO’s winds.
