All eyes have been on Uggie, the soon-to-be-retired dog from “The Artist,” who has been delighting the world with public appearances and awards show performances. The 10-year-old Jack Russell is even nominated for two Golden Collar Awards, an Oscars-type honor for Hollywood’s pups given out by Dog News Daily.
Cosmo from “Beginners,” Denver from “50/50” and Hummer from “Young Adult” are also nominated in the film category.
Now famed director Martin Scorsese (drink!) has written an open letter, published in the Los Angeles Times, asking that Blackie, the Doberman from his film “Hugo,” be considered for a Golden Collar Award. He writes:
OK, let's lay all our cards on the table. Jack Russell terriers are small and cute. Dobermans are enormous and — handsome. More tellingly, Uggie plays a nice little mascot who does tricks and saves his master's life in one of the films, while Blackie gives an uncompromising performance as a ferocious guard dog who terrorizes children. I'm sure you can see what I'm driving at.
Scorsese goes on to say that, while human antiheroes have been embraced, “when it comes to dogs, I guess we still have a long way to go.”
Maybe not that long, Mr. Scorsese. Dog News Daily has promised to put Blackie on the ballot if he receives 500 write-in nominations on its Facebook page by Feb. 6. Judging by the amount of activity of the page’s wall, Blackie will be up for a Golden Collar in no time.
