A moment of silence — oh, fine, a whole movie of silence — for “The Artist,” a near-wordless film (A wordless French film! A wordless black-and-white French film!) that took 10 nominations at Tuesday’s Academy Awards announcement, becoming the first silent film in 83 years to win a best picture nomination. Nods also went to Jean Dujardin for his performance in a leading role, Berenice Bejo for supporting actress and Michel Hazanavicius for directing. Fear not. Google helps you pronounce. Ah-za-na-Veeee-syoos.

Does this mean that we’re going nostalgic, going Frenchified? Does it mean that the voters of the academy long for jazzy music and leggy chorus girls (“The Artist” is about a 1920s movie star preparing for the rise of the talkie)? Does this mean that America does not want an app for that?

Golden Globe nominations: ‘New Girl,’ ‘Homeland,’ ‘Game of Thrones’ pick up nods

Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison in Showtime’s “Homeland.” (Kent Smith - Showtime) Ah, Golden Globe nominations, day! — the most wonderful day of the year, when we learn who will be Ricky Gervais’s new crop of victims on Jan. 15, as he hosts the Most Important Trophy Show for No Particular Reason, live, on NBC.

The fresh blood includes Zooey Deschanel, Laura Dern, and Matt LeBlanc. Deschanel’s new Fox chick-com “New Girl,” Dern’s new nervous-breakdown dramedy “Enlightened,” and LeBlanc’s self-skewering “Episodes” are among the nominated shows for best comedy series. Good luck, guys!

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association — a smallish batch of folks who cover Hollywood for overseas media outlets and who do the Globes voting — are known to be quicker than other trophy show voters at their annual orgy of statuette spewing, when it comes to embracing new TV programs.

This year is no exception. Among the TV nominees announced at the crack of dawn Wednesday, at the Beverly Hills Hilton hotel, were: HBO’s fantasy drama “Game of Thrones,” FX’s trippy “American Horror Story,” Starz’s Kelsey Grammer breakout vehicle “Boss,” and Showtime’s post-9/11 homeland security thriller Homeland” – which copped the most Globe noms for any new series this year, including ones for stars Claire Danes and Damian Lewis.

TV producer Ryan Murphy is already happy; he’s got a nominee for best drama series – FX’s ‘American Horror Story” – and best comedy series – Fox’s “Glee.” Ditto suits at Showtime and HBO, which tied for most series noms of any network. (Read Jen Chaney’s coverage of Globe film nominations here.)
