Santorum pushed to limit malpractice awards but sought larger payout for wife

David Goldman/AP - Republican presidential candidate former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, left, leaves the Faith and Freedom Coalition rally with his wife Karen Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

On the campaign trail, GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum says he will push to limit payments to victims in medical malpractice lawsuits, which he blames for unnecessarily driving up health-care costs. And over the course of his two decades in politics, he repeatedly spoke in favor of capping such awards.

But Santorum testified in support of his wife when she filed a medical malpractice suit in 1999 that sought $500,000, twice the cap in his original legislative proposal. Karen Santorum claimed that a Fairfax chiropractor had left her with a permanent back injury that probably would result in a lifetime of pain medication and restricted mobility.

SAG Awards 2012: ‘The Help,’ ‘Boardwalk Empire’ take home top honors

“The Help” had a big night at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, taking home the prize for performance by a cast in a motion picture. Two of the film’s stars, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer, won top acting honors for their roles in the much-hyped film adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s novel.

The win gives “The Help” a nice boost heading into the Academy Awards next month, where it will face the Golden Globe-winning films “The Artist” and “The Descendants.”

“The Artist’s” Jean Dujardin and Christopher Plummer of “Beginners” repeated their Globe wins, taking home awards for leading actor and supporting actor, respectively.

On the TV side, there were a good amount of repeat wins from last year’s SAG Awards. “Boardwalk Empire” and “Modern Family” won for ensemble in drama and comedy series, respectively. Steve Buscemi and Betty White also won again, as did Alec Baldwin. Yes, that means that Steve Carell’s final year on “The Office” was not recognized by the Emmys, the Golden Globes or the SAGs. Jessica Lange won for her role on “American Horror Story.”

The women of “Bridesmaids” may not have won an award, but they did have one of the best moments of the night. While introducing their film, Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph asked the audience to take a drink every time Martin Scorsese was mentioned. Melissa McCarthy gamely played along (a couple of times) on stage. Steve Buscemi also got into the act during his acceptance speech. He thanked Scorsese, an executive producer on “Boardwalk Empire,” leading presenter Tina Fey to down a glass of wine.

Mary Tyler Moore, with an introduction from Dick Van Dyke, made a brief appearance to accept a lifetime achievement award.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards, recognizing the best performances from TV and film, air tonight at 8 p.m. on TNT and TBS.

Expect the stars of “The Artist,” “The Descendants” and “The Help” to battle it out for the top awards, as they have all season. All eyes will be on the film side winners, as the SAG Awards traditionally serve as a good predictor for who will be victorious at the Oscars. “Modern Family,” “Boardwalk Empire” and “Game of Thrones” are just a few of the small screen casts in contention for a SAG Award.

Before the SAGs begin, refresh your memory and read about the nominees here and here.

Uggie, ‘The Artist’ dog, nominated for two Golden Collar Awards

Uggie, the dog, from the film "The Artist.” (Matt Sayles - AP) Hallelujah: The world may actually get to see Uggie, the scene-stealing Jack Russell Terrier from “The Artist,” make an acceptance speech this awards show season.

Dog News Daily has announced the nominations for its first ever Golden Collar Awards, given for the best performances by pooches of the small and silver screen.

Uggie was nominated in the best dog in a theatrical film category for his roles in “The Artist” and “Water for Elephants.” He helped announce the nominations with his “Artist” co-star Penelope Ann Miller. (And by helped, I mean he barked adorably on cue.)

He will compete against Cosmo (Arthur in “Beginners”), Denver (Skeletor in “50/50”) and Hummer (Dolce in “Young Adult.”)

The Golden Collar Awards will be given out Feb.13 in Los Angeles.

While Uggie is talented enough to earn two Golden Collar nods, the pup (who is 8, 9 or 10-years-old, depending on which outlet you’re reading) is not eligible to compete with human actors for an Oscar. Some of his fans want to change this.

Moveline has created an unofficial Oscar campaign for the terrier, “Consider Uggie,” which has been liked by over 7,000 people on Facebook.

Sure, “Artist” director Michel Hazanavicius told The Post’s John DeFore, “I’m not sure [Uggie’s] so expressive ... He’s very cute, [but] he doesn’t incline his head, he has really a stone face; he’s not an actor. He’s just going from Point A to Point B.” But doesn’t being “cute” count for anything?

Celebrate Uggie’s nominations by watching him do tricks on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” See the rest of the nominations below
