Celebrate MLK Day in D.C.

One way to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend: at his new memorial. (Carolyn Kaster - AP) This year marks the first time you can celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day by visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial. The area is also buzzing with other concerts, parades and service events commemorating King’s life, and many of them are free.

Annmarie Garden holds a three-day, family-friendly celebration with a group “peace wheel” and interactive performances by the Peaceweavers. The Kankouran West African Dance Company performs at Dance Place Saturday and Sunday. To learn more about the construction of the King memorial, hear a talk on Friday by Harry E. Johnson Sr., the president and CEO of the foundation behind the memorial, followed by a step dance performance at the National Museum of Natural History’s Baird Auditorium.

Then, on Monday evening at the Kennedy Center, Grammy-winning singer Bobby McFerrin performs a free concert with the Let Freedom Ring Choir. Tickets will be distributed starting at 5 p.m. in the Hall of Nations (two tickets per person maximum).
