Regarding Scott W. Drenkard’s Jan. 14 letter about imposing a national soda tax:
A tax on soda would serve two purposes. One is a disincentive to drink soda, but the other was not mentioned. A tax also would provide revenue to pay for the negative consequences of people drinking soda, such as obesity and health-care costs. This is not about freedom to choose your diet and drink soda, since people still would be free to consume as much soda as they want. However, through the tax, soda drinkers would become financially responsible for the consequences of their actions. In essence, this would make the rest of society more free, since it wouldn’t be paying for the bad choices of others.
