Senior Bowl offers inside glimpse for Mike Shanahan & Co.

I’m on my way down to Mobile, Ala., where this afternoon, Washington Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan and his staff will hold their first practice with the Senior Bowl’s South team.

This marks the first time that Shanahan has served as head coach of a Senior Bowl team; he was the offensive coordinator of one of the squads in 1986.

Outside of next month’s NFL Combine, the Senior Bowl — along with its week of practices – is viewed as the top predraft event, and coaches and officials from every NFL team are expected to be in attendance.

In working with the top senior college football players in the country, Shanahan & Co. will get an up-close look at prospects and get a good feel for their capabilities.

The Redskins worked to upgrade their defense in last year’s draft, and this year, the focus is expected to center around the offense, where quarterback, a right tackle, a big-play wide receiver, and possibly a running back rank among Washington’s top needs.

The two quarterbacks currently on the South roster are Arizona’s Nick Foles and Oklahoma State’s Brandon Weeden. But neither are believed to be worthy of the sixth overall pick, which Washington holds.

Here’s a look at the full South roster, and here’s the North roster.

More coming from Mobile, later today.
