PHILADELPHIA — Maryland’s final nonconference game of the season failed to deliver the feel-good boost the Terrapins needed heading into a brutal stretch of ACC competition, with fourth-ranked Duke due at Comcast Center on Wednesday and games against top 15 teams North Carolina and Virginia also upcoming.

After paring a 12-point second-half deficit to one, Maryland could get no closer against Temple and fell, 73-60, at the storied Palestra.

Maryland (12-6) has now lost to the Atlantic 10 stalwart twice in the last two seasons. And Saturday, the Terrapins also lost 7-foot-1 center Alex Len, who injured his right ankle 10 minutes into the game and was unable to continue, spending the balance of the game looking on from the bench, his foot encased in ice.

Information about the extent of his injury wasn’t immediately available.

Temple (13-5) lacked the inside presence that Maryland boasted but outrebounded Maryland 17-13 in the first half. And the Owls kept the Terrapins off-balance with crisp, crafty passes and lots of movement, while forcing turnovers and hasty shots on Maryland’s part.

Victimized by turnovers and hasty shooting, Maryland had no answer for the Owls’ three guards, Ramone Moore, Khalif Wyatt and Juan Fernandez, who collaborated on the decisive margin down the stretch, combining for 54 points.

Maryland Coach Mark Turgeon yanked guard Terrell Stoglin, who finished with 20 points, less than four minutes into the game as a rebuke for lax defense. “You haven’t guarded a ball screen yet!” the coach barked.

With Temple leading 14-10, Dunphy sent in 6-11 center Micheal Eric, who hadn’t played since Nov. 20 after injuring his right knee during practice. And the Temple partisans erupted in cheers.

Back in the game, Stoglin pulled the Terps even, 14-14, by drawing a foul as he slashed to the basket and converting the free throws that followed.

Then came a series of fruitless possession at both ends. Both teams’ offenses were still stalled at the 10-minute mark when Len hurt his right ankle upon committing his second foul and limped to the sideline and then hopped off court for treatment. To that point, his seven minutes had produced one turnover and the two fouls.

Mychal Parker hit a fall-away jumper to cut Maryland’s deficit to 18-16, and guard Pe’Shon Howard let out a roar when a wildly off-balance jumper went in to tie it again at 18, energizing the Maryland fans who occupied one end of the gym.

But as the half wound down, Temple pulled away, Wyatt driving past a phalanx of defenders for an easy layup.

Sean Mosley sped back and blocked what would have been an easy layup in transition. And when Nick Faust raced to the Terrapins’ end, surely a dunk in his plans, officials called Temple for a foul. The enraged Owls fans booed Faust mercilessly as he stepped to free throw line with 36 seconds on the clock. He split the shots, and Temple took a 32-29 lead to the locker room at the break.

Temple erupted for eight unanswered points out of the break, with Moore and Wyatt hitting back-to-back three-pointers.

Turgeon called a timeout, but soon after, Maryland’s deficit ballooned to 12 points.

Howard’s shooting kept the Terrapins in it, and Stoglin came on strong, finishing a terrific pass from Mosley, who dived full-out for a defensive rebound, with a jumper that pulled Maryland within one, 55-54, with 8 minutes 17 seconds to play.

There wasn’t a person in the Palestra who didn’t have reason to scream at that point.

But then Sean Mosley picked up his fourth foul, and he sat. Maryland’s zeal for rebounding joined him on the bench.

Turgeon sent Mosley back out with 4:40 to play.

Stoglin was the only Maryland player who scored during the crucial stretch. But he couldn’t keep pace with the talents of Temple’s back-court trio of Wyatt, Moore and Fernandez, who in turn hit from beyond the arc to keep the lead out of reach.
